I've noticed that a lot of my geek friends (which most of my friends are geeks, so I have a huge sample to pull from) prefer not to have kids. There are some who have had them, but in recent years I'm seeing more who do not want kids. The reasons given? No patience for raising children. Recognition that there are other things they want to do with their lives, and children are a major responsibility which would delay or even eliminate opportunity to do those things. Decision that the world is too populated as it is, so why contribute to the overpopulation crisis? Those are the top three.
I have hemmed and hawed about having kids. Sometimes I really want one. Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I really want to adopt a poor girl from another country and give her a life she wouldn't have otherwise. Either way, I've decided to defer making the decision for another year...things are not financially stable enough in my life right now to work on getting pregnant anyway. And emotionally? Well, my relationships have changed dramatically over the past year, for the better mostly. I have to question how soon I want to add a kid to that mix, too.
