Wednesday: Ran. Stopped off at Jelly Belly Factory on the way out of town. Fun tour. Yummy sample counter. I bought a pile of "souvenirs". Drove to Dunsmuir, near Mt. Shasta; slept in railroad car.

Thursday: Poked around town of Mt. Shasta, esp. a couple of bookstores my mom loved. Made friends with cute black Lab at a photo store. Drove to Portland. Dug out city map to figure out a six-mile running course starting and ending at the hotel.

Friday: 6mi, 63min! Hills are actually a win. I think I saw every homeless person in Portland. They were friendly. Rest of day: Powell's. Discovered a whole block of delicious restaurants within a ten-minute walk of the bookstore. Spent "too much" money, as expected. Not sorry.

Saturday: Saturday Market, under Burnside Bridge. Nearly collapsed in pain on streetcar on the way to lunch. Time to start painkillers. Scared the bejeezus out of my mom. She hasn't seen me go through this in quite a while. 133% of my allowable dose of Aleve for the day, plus a glass of wine (yeah, bad girl), made me ambulatory again. Back at market, spent too much money by some measure, but I don't regret a single purchase. Sneakily purchased surprise Mother's Day gift while Mom was distracted elsewhere. :-)

6mi, 63min!

CJ! That's great time! Go you! You are really stretching it out now.

I look forward to hearing more about sleeping in the railroad car. My father-in-law is a real train buff. It sounds like it might be right up his alley.

6 miles, 63 minutes! I hope I can keep up...oh wait. Now I remember...you were going to carry me.

We did discuss that plan, didn't we? Or maybe I was keeping it secret so it would be more of a special surprise for you...I forget.

Thanks! :-) Hills help. Uphill slows me down less than downhill speeds me up. I think.

I'm starting to vacillate between being nervous about the Bay to Breakers run and feeling like it'll be nothing and I should try a half-marathon next.

I can imagine I'll be pretty wiped out by the end of that morning... whichever way it goes.

You might well be up to a half-marathon, but for now I think you'd be well advised to stay focused on the Bay to Breakers run. You're going to do well in that CJ, and that's going to be something you can be pretty damn proud of.

Yes, I'll keep the focus. Smart. (And, in order, I hope so and thank you!)
