Female Hormonal Cycles

"In women, these hormonal cycles affect hunger and fullness, a surprising new analysis indicates."

Surprising? Hormonal cycles affect hunger and fullness? Next they'll be reminding me I have boobs.

Yup, it's true: I'm cynical about the level of research relating to women's bodies. Any guy who's ever looked down his nose at me for my frustration is welcome to earn his sneer by fixing my menstrual pain. Step right up; the line forms right here.

I'm shocked! Shocked, I tell you!!

Of course, I remember being told by my gym teacher when I was in 5th grade that the cramps were all in my head, and if I exercised I'd feel better. Right.

Next they'll tell us that PIV sex causes pregnancy....

I've been told that too. It's even self-contradictory! Bonus points!

Oh, that's an old wives' tale. It'll never be verified by science.

Yeah, I remember when the first 'shocking' studies demonstrated that PMS was real, and not just in our heads. Duhhhh...

You know, having lived mainly among men and boys all my life, and having a mother who had had her hysterectomy while I was still young (and who spent all HER time among men and boys), I remember the day my husband, his mother, and I were talking about PMS and other hormonal mood-related things. She was SO up front about being a total bitch during the pre-menopause she was going through, and about how she always drove the men in her life crazy once a month any way -- and then she told Rondo, "Aren't you glad you don't have to go through this?"

That was a total revelation to me. The thought that while men merely had to put UP with us, we're the ones who actually have to go through these hormonal swings.

I wonder how many studies it will take before a woman's word about what she's going through gets any respect. I'm sure outright disbelief of womens' claims is a phenomenon that started well before Freud.

Gee, what YOU deal with matters TOO, huh? You radical you.

Yeah, the scary part is I was mid-twenties before this even occurred to me. I was utterly shocked by this blinding truth I'd never even seen before.
