I got to go to Portola Redwoods State Park last weekend! It was very pretty. We had originally been planning to go to Castle Rock, a well-known place you can just drop in, but an entire Boy Scout troop was there and the trail camp was full. The ranger was very nice and recommended Portola. We hadn't known you could go there without a reservation. Now I'm glad this happened, because Portola's such a nice place. It is now my new "favorite no reservation backup plan"! Nice shady woodsy trails, just a bit of chill in the air, a flat campsite with a latrine nearby... We finished with dinner just as it was getting dark, perfect timing.

It was COLD that night!! I need better gear if I'm going to go backpacking this late in the season. Grump.

Next morning we made breakfast with the last of our water and walked a mile down to the river to get more. Boiled it, of course. We didn't have water filters along because we had been planning to go to Castle Rock, and they have potable water. Boy were we ever cold, shivering around the tiny little stove waiting for the water to be ready. At least we had something warm to drink when we were done. :-)

After hiking out, we went to REI and replenished our supplies. More freeze-dried food - too bad the selection is SMALL this late in the year. And a better sleeping bag for me - YAY! - I've been wanting one for ages, and now is a good time. Of course, now that I have it, I want to go out again immediately!

Got home and washed everything. I'm all ready to do it again! Except it's Monday and I have to work during the week, boo hoo.

One of the less interesting surveys I have done. Still, a couple cute questions.

The FAA finally decided that I and my little airplane are no worse a security risk than the student pilots that have been allowed to fly in this area for weeks now. Woohoo!

Details on the front page of AOPA's web site.

I wonder what that discussion was like. I thought it was funny that if I wanted to fly, my best shot was to destroy my pilot's license.
