This detached from a car as it passed me. Missed me, hit a snow bank. When I returned from work, it was still there, so I collected it.

Not sure what happened, except the car's bumper also (mostly) detached.

For the past 12 days Hawk has been going through a familiar process of recovery from having foot surgery. It's familiar because this was Foot Surgery II: The Other Foot. But this is also a case where the sequel is better, or at least less bad, than the original. That's because this recovery is going faster.

On Day 12 today we went to the monthly flea market at De Anza Community College in Cupertino. Hawk wheeled around with her knee scooter covering quite a bit of distance as we rolled/walked/kick-pedaled up and down the long aisles in the parking lot a few times. And this wasn't her first outing with the scooter. We went out to eat together last night as well as once earlier this  past week.

One of the reasons Hawk's recovery is going better with Surgery II is that she doesn't have an infection in the wound site like she did with Surgery I. That's giving her an overall lower amount of pain level to contend with. In particular, she doesn't have the burning feeling in the wound site that she did last time. Last time she had that burning feeling right away after drugs from the surgery wore off. We think now that she got the infection during surgery, not from having the stitches removed too soon at Day 14. Though still, fuck Dr. Yips for removing the stitches too early and not seeing the signs of infection, and also being a misogynist douche who mocks female patients and female clinical staff.

Without an infection in the wound this time, markers of Hawk's recovery seem to be coming quicker. Here at Day 12 she's already at, say, where she was at Day 16 (or later) last time. I say that from gauging her energy level moving around. Yes, she still needs to rest after an outing, but there's no face-planting in her pancakes like last time.

She'll likely get the splint removed and replaced with a boot at her clinical followup this coming week on Day 20. Yes, that's later than last time; but IMO that's because the doctors are playing cautious because doing it on Day 14 last time was too soon. Or because that's the day that fits their schedules. 🤷 Though again, it was too early last time not because Day 14 was too soon but because the wound got infected, and because the doctor who subbed in at Day 14 was a douche who missed the signs of infection (despite being a physician with 30+ years of experience!) and brushed off Hawk's reports of pain as yet-another weak woman whining.

I am optimistic that subsequent markers of Hawk's recovery will continue to arrive ahead of schedule. In particular, I'm thinking that by Week 3 this time she might be where she was at Week 5 last time. We'll see.

1. Don't be precious about photos.
2. If it's blurry and it's not required for ID or proof, delete.
3. If it's so similar to the previous photo as to be identical, then it doesn't matter which duplicate you delete. Delete either.
4. It's not analog photography, if you want more than one copy of the photo, cloning the entire photo is easy in Lightroom.
4.a. In bird photography you don't end up editing photos in an artistic way so you never end up cloning photos anyway.
5. Editing the same pose over and over is tiring. You just need one or maybe two.
6. No matter how much energy you pour into trying to save bad photos (too dark, grainy) there is a limit to how good they'll look. Set a reasonable standard and move on. Not everything can be saved.
7. Taking less photos in the field means less culling later, so be reasonably conservative in taking photos. I want to spend more time outside birding, and less time indoors editing.
8. It's better to have photos edited than to take 1,000 potentially good photos that never get uploaded or shared.
9. You never go back to old photos to re-edit them. Keeping the raw files is fine but seriously you never go back to re-edit.
10. Mental overwhelm is the surest way to giving up. If you've taken too many photos in one day that it feels daunting to go through all of them in one batch, divide them into folders by location. (You can always regroup them in a folder after). If that's still too much, halve or quarter or however much is required, into their own folders. (You can always regroup...) You must have achievable, reasonable intermediate goals to persist.
11. If it's sharp when it's cropped then it's sharp. Stop zooming to 300% and freaking out it's not sharp.

Round 1: cull any obviously bad photo - blurry without interest, too dark, obvious dupes, bird no longer in frame, accidental photos of the ground etc.
Round 2: delete dupes, this photo came earlier in the stream and was okay but I have better photos after and it's not showing any unique behaviour that I should keep
Round 3: pick out from the rest which I should spend time editing

I took probably several thousand photos last year and edited almost 700 of them, uploading them to ebird. I took my camera out 59 days. A lot of these rules really helped me, because editing photos takes a lot of decision making energy. I decided I needed to basically reduce the mental load with some rules instead of basically starting afresh with every single photo. Coming home from a week's trip with two thousand photos is both showing restraint on my part and also completely overwhelming, and also, I'm not cutting down my other hobbies to spend all my time in front of a screen!

This is the highest rated image I have on ebird last year:

woman shares date experience (l) couple on a date (r)

There’s no doubt that dating has always been an expensive activity. As prices increase and inflation is still high, it’s turning into a luxury to take significant others or potential partners out on a date. Now couples are resorting to splitting the bill or meal.

While money can be the death of a relationship, so can the way it’s handled. When this woman wanted to add an extra entree, her boyfriend’s reaction boiled her blood, igniting conflict in the comments section about relationship behaviors. TikTok creator Liz (@liz_bizness) recounts the incident in her car.

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of my top surgery. I meant to post something at the time, but the day got away from me. Is there an accepted method of celebrating such things? Do the crepes I had for breakfast count? They are, like me, very flat. :3

It's incredibly difficult for me to remember that it was last year. It both feels like it just happened and like it has been many years already. I still someday want to write up more about what the experience was like. For the moment, though, I'm just glad to have it done. With everything going on, it's comforting to know that this is one change that cannot be undone or taken from me.

Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Boot kink, smut
Notes: Belated Xmas fic, I wasn’t sure what to do (I did consider it being Jyrki focussed but for some reason my mind couldn’t come up with a clear thought, same with a directly Xmas idea) then suddenly this vague idea came to mind so…
(But yay it’s done at last! Though the title is kinda sucky but it’s almost 3am and can’t think of a better one, I’ll also link in pics in the morning)

Meadowville, Chapter 5

Apparently one of the possible Eurovision entries for 2026 is this band made up of firefighters? Idk if they’ve been definitely selected yet as Sweden’s entry.

An Australian talking about spiders in the most soothing and lyrical voice imaginable.

A 19th-c Portuguese estate with a lot of dramatic Masonic imagery.

Angine de Poitrine. Not sure how to describe this band. Sort of like Daft Punk but acoustic and polka-dotted?

In a generally unsurprising plot twist, all three of the Babylon 5 vids in this year's Festivids were by me. I haven't gotten around to properly reposting them to my signed vid account, but for now the signed vids are uploaded to the anonymous account and they can also be downloaded by clicking through to Vimeo as an interim measure until I get them properly posted for download.

I also added them to my Sholio Vids collection.

Some random notes on this year's vidding under the cut.

I did end up going to the movies as the main activity of the day. The only activity, when you get down to it, especially since I stayed in bed late enough into the morning I missed the breakfast window. I found it fairly remarkable how few people were out on the streets - not surprising, but remarkable. It made me want to walk around a bit more to appreciate the relative absence of people. Not enough to go through with it, but the desire was there.

It's cold enough in my apartment for socks and a bathrobe, and I've now broken out the fingerless gloves. If I had the space in my freezer for the loaves, I'd make bread as a reason to turn on the oven, and as I don't, I'm having to make do with hot tea.

It’s always nice when service or hospitality workers get to let loose a little. They really are the backbone of our culture, so they deserve to have some fun.

It’s especially nice when these workers get to develop good relationships with regulars, considering they so often have to deal with customers from hell. And with good relationships come jokes, pranks, and funny videos for the rest of us civilians to enjoy.
