The story has one guy (it has to be a guy; I'll leave the reasons as an exercise for the reader) who says that the populace as a whole is somewhat complicit. His "Friends" pretend to agree with him but sidle away from him at gatherings. He won't shut up about it, though, and by the end of the piece he is brutally killed by an angry mob. Story ends with all going dark as he dies.
