As others have pointed out 5 units (whether it is 5 trips along the pool or 5 trips "there & back") is pretty good starting out. When I tried swimming a couple of years ago, I couldn't even make 1 trip along the pool without stopping (and that's just 1 length, not 1 "there & back").
I decided, though, that swimming just isn't for me -- and luckily I have other options. I recently started riding my bicycle again, and after the first several humbling times of not being able to get very far, I'm getting my leg strength & aerobic ability back, so I'm enjoying it.
I'm really glad that you're learning how to pace yourself. Once you understand that, then you can actually learn to stop before you'll be in too much pain to walk the next day!!!
