How far have you gone?

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] kineticphoenix. I chose to answer farthest east/west from where I live, instead of defining "east" or "west" by longitude.

This is how far I've been in each direction on the globe. Feel free to copy and post your own answers.

Farthest North: 8km north of Rovaniemi, Finland (just past the Arctic Circle)
Farthest South: Temple of Abu Simbel, Egypt (22.37N 31.62E)
Farthest East: Aswan, Egypt (24.05N 32.56E)
Farthest West: Hiroshima, Japan (34.4N 132.45E)

I'm a little bummed that I had to look up which place was farthest east from my home. I can guess in general from the time zone, but I don't have a good picture of how things line up. For example, I had no idea Aswan was east of much of the Gulf of Suez.

It says something about me that I see Aswan and think Syene because the ancient city of Syene lies beneath modern day Aswan. When Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the Earth, he used Syene and Alexandria as the endpoints of his reference angle.

Also, for a couple of millennia the "prime meridian" ran through Alexandria. It was later shifted to Greenwich, though some place it through Paris.

My google search for "Aswan longitude" gathered quite a few mentions of Syene and Eratosthenes. :)
