Friday Five: Housing

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
Counting any place permanent enough that I got mail there, and ignoring any moves within a dormitory: nineteen. With moves within a dormitory: 22.
2. Which was your favorite and why?
Oh man. I'll have to say this one, because it's roomy, sunny, and mine. (This is the first house I "own".) However, lots of other places have had great things about them. The apartment not far from the Arc de Triomphe, for example, walking distance from the Champs-Elysees. The house in Newton, with the undeveloped lot next door, a wonderful place to play under enormous pine trees. The East Campus dormitory, where I was surrounded by fun creative brilliant people, and we were less than a mile from a subway stop.
3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Yes, both. I get stressed trying to pack everything before the final deadline. I am slow, meticulous, and methodical. Nothing I've packed has ever broken in a move, but this usually means a couple all-nighters just before the lease runs out. On the other hand, it's wonderfully exciting exploring a new area, arranging things in a new place, and having the feeling of starting fresh.
4. What's more important, location or price?
Either one can be a deal-breaker. I absolutely must be able to afford it, so in that sense, price is the more important thing. However, within the range I can afford, I'll often pay a bit more for a better location, so in that sense, location is more important.
5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
Outdoor hot tub with enough privacy to be clothing-optional.
Big enough yard for a dog to run and play.
Lots of natural light.
Insulation.
Attic.
Basement.
Big closets.
Three bedrooms: my room, Rob's room, and our room. Oh, heck, it's a dream house: a fourth bedroom, permanently made up as a guest room.
Wood-burning fireplace.
NO pool.
Gardening space.
Pretty bits: the occasional round or octagonal window, a cut glass inset in the front door.
Situated in an area of natural beauty.
Close enough to other people that I'll always have friends; far enough away from other people that I can always find a parking space.
Good restaurants nearby.
An airstrip and associated hangar. This can be right in the back yard, although perhaps not directly adjoining the dog run. I love airplane noise.
Yeah, ok, I dream big :-). Like Wendy, I know I am blessed in many ways. I don't need this dream house. Still, I'm happy to answer the question. :-)
